Auld Lang Syne Brownies and Milk

Brownie stacked

It will soon be 2010. Where did the year go?

I know a lot of people are making resolutions this year, but to me reflecting on what's transpired in 2009 is just as important as looking ahead. Here's the big question I'd like to end the year with: "What did I learn?"

It's one thing to make mistakes. It's another thing to learn from mistakes. It's another thing entirely to learn from somebody else's mistakes...and from their triumphs.

So please, pull up a chair and join me in a brownie, a glass of milk and some conversation.

Tell us about what you've learned, what's inspired you, or what helps you live a better life.

I'll do my part too. Here are some observations that work for me:

1. Never, ever put yourself down. Ever. And don't let anyone else do it either.

2. Every week, plan at least one activity that you'll look forward to.

3. Eliminate people from your life who are toxic and repetitively drain your energy. It is critically important to surround yourself with supportive people.

4. Before you go to bed each night, remember the happiest experience of the day. When you wake up, expect the day to be a good one.

5. If someone makes a negative comment toward you or tells you you can't do something, consider their motives. It's usually projection and has more to do with them than with you.

6. Make decisions. It's rarely necessary nor helpful to get the opinion of ten people before making a decision. Only you know what's best for you.

7. Stop talking and get going. The more you talk about things, the less likely you are to do them.

8. Learn to enjoy your own company.

9. It turns out health actually is everything. Guard it.

10. Shut off the television. This of course goes with #9 but why not create your own culture? Expose yourself to things that uplift and that are of your choosing. Rent or borrow movies, read, listen to music, take up a hobby. Be wary of letting anyone with a profit motive infiltrate your brain.

Okay, so those are a few insights that I find valuable. What works for you? I look forward to reading your comments below.

In return, I'll share my fabulous brownie recipe with you. It's really quick, easy and delicious.

Auld Lang Syne Brownies

2 sticks butter, melted
395 g. sugar (about 2 cups)
2 tsp. vanilla
4 large eggs
68 g. Valrohna cocoa powder
130 g. flour (about 1 cup)
1/2 tsp. baking powder`
1/4 tsp. salt
Chopped nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13 X 9 " pan with butter.

Place melted butter in bowl of stand mixer. Using paddle attachment stir in sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add cocoa powder and blend.
Add flour, baking powder and salt. Beat well.
Stir in nuts (optional).
Pour into greased pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25-35 minutes.

Most of all, I sincerely hope you have a happy, healthy and joyous New Year.
Here's to the journey in 2010.

oh i agree with everything on your list. Number 3 was a big one for me this year as I had to cut ties with someone who just kept making me miserable over and over again. I do try every night when I go to bed to think about the positive that happened and keep that in my heart. You know what will be hardest? Turning the tv off. How sad is that right?

I'm glad we found each other this year and like you said, here is to a happy, peaceful and HEALTHY 2010!

I'm pretty sure brownies are my weak point. I like the looks of these brownies!
Happy New Year!

I really like #4. I'm going to try to start doing that.

Is it bad that I'm suddenly thinking about making brownies and it's not even 9 am?

Happy New Year!

El, This post gave me a few things to consider, and upon reflection it has given me a great deal to be grateful for. Over time I've toiled over 3, 5 and sometimes the conflict of 8. I still need to work on 7, but for the most part I am very happy with where I am, and feel confident that I am at a healthy state. I truly appreciate your thought provoking and deeply philosophical posts. I'm grateful to be able to follow the beautiful and inspiring desserts, photos and writings that you produce.

Wishes for happiness and blessings in the coming year.

You definitely have me thinking after reading this post. I definitely think it's time to start taking better care of myself. Why do I always set myself aside for others? I hear you on #3. I'm learning. Have a happy new year!

Brilliant list. I absolutely agree. I'd offer some of my own thoughts but don't feel like I should until I can at least master the items on your list. The brownies should help! Cheers 2010!!!

El, thanks for this list, something I really need right now. #10, so guilty of this, maybe I'd get more things done if only I..shut..of the television! Also agree on the toxic people, need to stay away from all the negativity.
These brownies looks so sinfully decadent so perfect to herald in the new year. Happy New Year to you, 2010 will be a blast!

2, 6, 7...and I'll add to number 1: praise yourself every day. Would also like to know more about your emergency trip to Paris ten years ago?!

The brownies look great, but there's an error in the flour measurement - 9 oz flour equal around 2 cups, not 1!

What an excellent list! Happy New Year to you :)
That last photograph is stunning. Snow has never looked so appealing to me! I want to see what is at the end of the path.

El said...

Meryl - thank you for noticing. I just remeasured everything using grams instead. I reposted and the recipe is now correct.

El said...

Kristen- at the end of that path is the site of the first shots of the American Revolution.

Realizing what and who was fake and superficial was key for me. Moving into 2010 with a lighter step.

happy new year El! i hope you had a lovely holiday season. i love your reflections. my mantra is to take fortune in the small things in life. rather then thinking about what we want, let's rather give thanks for what we have. of course, those brownies are something that i want and soon shall have :)

You have the perfect list there and I think I'll copy it down and keep it with me. I wish you a very Happy & Healthy 2010 and now pass the brownies, please.

It's a lovely list of healthy elements of life. TV is not an issue for us since it is so rarely on. I'd add enjoy the beauties of nature and observe the simple details of it. Inspiring and definitely uplifting and mind quietening.

Happy New Year 2010!

Fantastic post. I think I'd have to emphasize #3. If you don't eliminate toxic people your life will become contaminated. This includes ending communication with family members who are toxic and it also includes cutting off abusive parents. Nice brownies BTW. HNY.

Your list has definitely gotten me thinking. 2009 was,for me, a year of great contentment and feeling like I was in a very good place. Even from the best of places, though, I believe it is important to be open to, and say yes, to the new things that might come along. If they don't come along conveniently, then seek out a few new challenges, inspirations or learning experiences. Thanks for the great post and I can't wait to try the brownies!

wonderful post...I know it raised emotions for me. about 4 years I removed toxic people from my life and have kept it that way. so glad you posted that for others to read and hopefully click on to.
happy new year to you as well. glad you found me so I could, in turn, find your wonderful blog.

I enjoyed this list and I often enjoy thinking about and making my own, but this year took a less serious way about my reflecting by not stating any of what I've decided. A new tact that fits right in with your item on less talk and more action. We'll see how it goes. Lovely brownie recipe. I'd like to have one to munch on as I meandered down that path in the woods...

An excellent (and tasty) way to face the new year! I aim to follow many of the things on this list. I can't promise I'll be successful on everything, but I think that's part of the process as well. Cheers to 2010 and many more delcious dishes to come!

I never, ever do resolutions, but my ongoing life quest is adhering to the 'don't sweat the small stuff' philosophy, rolling with life and enjoying it. For example, all of my homemade baked Christmas gifts are being made this weekend...because I didn't have time to make them in December! Oh well! Who doesn't enjoy presents in January, too? :-)
As for the brownies...I have to stop reading this blog at work, they look delicious. I cannot wait to try them!!
Happy 2010

Hey El,

It's my first time on your blog and I fell in love with it instantly. Lovely post for the end of the year. And your photographs are beautiful.

Your list is very well put together. I agree with everything except tv (I don't have one - I don't want to have one, I can live very happily without it!) :)
As I read through it made me thinking. I need to work on 1, 6 and 7! Thanks for sharing, I will keep this in my mind.

Wishing you a very happy 2010 full of love, laughter and joy.

I'm making these brownies this weekend for my husband to take to work for a party.Thank you for sharing and have a happy and fulfilling year ahead :)

Urgh...as I sit here with the tv on just for background noise, I'm voting for #10 and I love the idea of doing something every week you look forward to. It's all too easy to just get into the routine of the week and before you know it, it's over...a new one ready to be repeated. I've been trying to break up the weeks with something new, whether it's a recipe or getting together with an old friend or a new museum...

Not sure how I missed this post a few weeks ago, but just as relevant today. Thanks, El.

What lovely insights...I'm familiar with each of them (some more than others), but its always good to be reminded time and again. Bookmarking this for much-needed perspective when feeling overwhelmed! Happy 2010 El :)
